What my work taught — or reminded — me in 2024

Vulnerability is strength
Many people are afraid to show their weaknesses or real feelings, believing it makes them weaker. Yet in the counselling process I have seen that the clients who dare to be vulnerable experience the greatest change. Vulnerability opens the door to genuine self-knowledge and allows deeper relationships with others. It is the courage to admit we are not perfect — and precisely that makes us human and strong. This lesson reminded me that even as a professional it matters not to be afraid of being myself, because that is what builds trust and connection with clients.
Listening is the most powerful tool
My work reminded me that active, sincere listening is one of the most powerful tools there is. When a person feels heard and understood, they begin to see themselves differently — they feel their problems matter and that they are not alone. This creates a safe space to explore one’s inner world without fear of judgement. Sometimes there is no need for advice or solutions — sometimes you simply need to be there and listen.
Resilience grows through difficulty
This year I watched clients face challenges such as loss, divorce and anxiety about the future. They lived through hardship — and at the same time grew resilience. Resilience is not the ability to avoid pain, but the ability to accept it and learn from it. It reminded me once again that difficulty is an unavoidable part of life, but it can be turned into an opportunity to grow. When we focus on what we can control and learn from hardship, we become stronger and more resilient.
Every person is a new lesson
Every person is unique, so every session is a new experience and a new lesson. This year only confirmed that a psychologist’s work demands constant curiosity, openness and renewed knowledge. By learning and immersing myself in people’s experiences, I grew both as a professional and as a person.
Working with people in 2024 strengthened my belief that all of us have an incredible capacity to change and grow. It was a year full of courage, compassion and learning — for my clients and for me.
